The standard approach to weight loss is based on an ‘eat less, exercise more’ approach that assumes that if you eat fewer calories and burn more calories through exercise you will lose weight. This approach is usually effective in the short term, but, at some point, you are guaranteed to hit a plateau. Once you hit this brick wall, it’s very unlikely you will be able to continue to lose weight. This is because when you reduce calories, your metabolic rate slows down. Your metabolic rate will stay low for up to a year, which makes it very likely that you will regain the with that you have lost and maybe even more.
Unfortunately, the ‘eat less, move more’ approach to weight loss ignores that fact that our weight is largely controlled by the hormones that regulate appetite and fat storage.
One of the reasons calorie-restricted diets tend to fail is because they make you really hungry and can increase food cravings. This is because calorie-restricted diets change the hormones that control hunger and satiety so that when you lose weight, your body will fight to put the weight back on. Your hormones drive you to eat more and you are caught in a trap of yo-yo dieting.
Reducing sugar and processed foods will reduce the blood sugar swings that most people eating a standard western diet will suffer. You experience less intense hunger and your cravings for sugary or carb-heavy foods disappear. As your blood sugar levels stabilise, your body will produce less of the hormone insulin which drives fat storage and inhibits fat burning. When insulin levels are low, your body is able to burn fat for fuel and weight loss occurs.
